Abstract [en]

This qualitative study examines Swedish social workers’ views on the emotional and psychological effects of incarceration on families and the strategies they use to support them. Through interviews with four social workers, the findings reveal that families experience deep grief, anxiety, shame, and isolation due to stigma and loss. Many cope with unhealthy habits like silence or substance use, which worsen stress. Social workers provide tailored emotional and practical support, such as counseling and trust-building, to help families manage these challenges. However, systemic barriers like court delays, unclear information, and limited support for adults increase family distress. The study highlights the need for better support systems and coordination to strengthen family resilience. Despite a small sample, these insights inform social work practices and suggest future research into diverse family experiences.
