How homelessness can be prevented : a literature review on the importance of social work in counteracting a social problem (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This literature review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of preventive and counteractive methods within social work to prevent homelessness. Based on the 14 selected studies, could people be identified with greater risk of becoming homeless, preventive methods to avoid the emergence of homelessness and counteractive strategies for existing homelessness. The issue was found to be complex, homelessness rarely appeared as an isolated problem, which placed additional demands on social work. Violence and other social issues were factors which contributed to the risk of becoming homeless, with low or no income being identified as the primary cause. Effective countermeasures included integration in the labor market and housing programs offering sustainable living solutions. With the introduction of the new Social Services Act in year 2025, the importance of social work will be further strengthened.  The authors concluded that preventive efforts are most crucial, as counteractive methods did not prevent new homelessness from arising.
