Abstract [en]

The 2023 EU Battery Regulation marks a transformative shift in how sustainability is embedded into the design, production, and lifecycle management of electric vehicle batteries (EVBs). This thesis develops a decision-support framework to help practitioners navigate the complex landscape of regulatory compliance without losing sight of the sustainability goals of their organizations. By systematically mapping the EU Battery Regulation to the EVB lifecycle, the study identifies 44 key decision nodes—across 12 lifecycle stages from pre-design strategy to end-of-life recovery—where compliance obligations intersect with, support, or complicate key sustainability objectives. Methods include a systematic literature review and qualitative interviews with senior professionals in the automotive industry. Four core sustainability goals—climate action, circularity, responsible business, and business viability—are distilled from industry insights. Grounded in systems thinking and sustainability science, these goals inform the framework, which helps identify and evaluate trade-offs and alignment opportunities across decision points. By structuring decision-making into a sequential process, the framework reduces complexity by making regulatory obligations, goal conflicts, and downstream implications more visible. The result is a practical tool that supports informed, reflexive decision-making—revealing how early choices shape sustainability outcomes throughout the battery lifecycle. Rather than prescribing solutions, the framework helps practitioners structure their decision space and operationalize sustainability under regulatory constraints.
