Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Laser scanning continues to expand its range of applications every year as itstechnology and efficiency develop. Traditionally, it has primarily been used inthe construction industry but has recently seen a surge in popularity acrossmany different fields. With the introduction of various types of scanners, itcan be difficult to determine which scanner is best suited for specific projects.

The purpose of this thesis is to compare the point cloud quality of the LeicaRTC360 and the NavVis VLX laser scanners by scanning the same area, usingthe same control points for georeferencing, and the same check points tocalculate the deviations between them. An analysis was conducted to evaluatethe difference in data quality in terms of positional uncertainty and pointdensity, and to determine which applications each scanner is most suitable for.

The work was carried out on a street in Sickla, Stockholm, near Clintonmätkonsults office, where the area was scanned using the terrestrial laserscanner Leica RTC360 and the mobile laser scanner NavVis VLX 1. A localcoordinate system was established, and control points were measured using aLeica TS16 total station to align the point clouds to the same system. Thecoordinate system was calculated and adjusted, the Leica RTC360 and NavVisVLX point clouds were processed. Check points measured with the totalstation were then compared to the point cloud coordinates.

The results showed that the Leica RTC360 had lower uncertainties andachieved a higher point density based on the capabilities of the instruments. The RMS values for the Leica RTC360 were 3 millimeters in plane and 3millimeters in height. NavVis VLX got RMS values of 16 millimters in planeand 7 millimeters in height.

As expected, the point cloud from the terrestrial laser scanner hadconsiderably lower positional uncertainty in all examined categories. TheRMS values were approximately 5 and 2 times higher, respectively, in planeand height for the NavVis VLX. The areas of application were found to differbetween the two instruments, as it became clear that the NavVis VLX is moresuited for lighter tasks with lower accuracy requirements, where timeefficiency and ease of interpreting the point cloud at first glance are of higherpriority. The Leica RTC360, on the other hand, is better suited for projectsinvolving larger open areas and longer distances, as well as for projects wherethe point coordinates will be used for further data analysis.
