Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Aim: The aim of this study is to explore how professional football players and football clubs maintain their brands, as well as how they communicate and express authenticity in their personal branding strategies on social media.
Method: In the following study, a qualitative research method has been applied based on an inductive epistemology. Data collection was conducted using semi-structured interviews with professional football players and marketing managers from various clubs in Sweden. The responses from the participants were analyzed using thematic analysis, where relevant codes, themes, and quotes were identified to highlight key patterns and insights.
Results and conclusions: The study demonstrates that professional football players primarily express authenticity by emphasizing their passion for football, while clubs employ strategic transparency to balance players’ personal brands with the team’s image.
Contribution of the thesis: This study provides a deeper understanding of why authenticity is important in the marketing of football players and teams on social media. Building on existing theories in the field, insights from Social Media Influencer (SMI) marketing, and empirical data collected through interviews with practitioners, the study offers a simplified and modernized framework for enhanced understanding.
Suggestions for further research: Future research could involve a quantitative study to investigate how football players express authenticity through passion. Additionally, clubs both within and outside off football could be analyzed to determine if their focus on transparency remains consistent, as suggested by this study. Qualitative research could also be conducted to explore whether similar patterns are found in other sports and related professions.
