Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The Arctic is warming two to four times faster than the global average due to the albedo effect. The Barents Sea is a part of the Arctic Ocean where fishing in the Barents Sea has a significant role in Norway’s economy. The aim with this thesis was to, through a literature review, identify potential economic and environmental effects the invasion of the red kingcrab can have in Norwegian waters. The results show that red king crabs change the benthic environment and can harm native species in the new environment because of the crab’s size, behavior, life length and the big size of the population. Even though an increased catch of red king crabs can have some positive effects, the invasion also includes some negative effects on the invaded ecosystem and its species, which can lead to reduced fishing of other species and animals and thus lead to less income. It’s impossible to eradicate red king crabs because they spread fast and they are too many. There should be a collaboration between stakeholders affected by changes in marine ecosystems to combat biological invasions.
