Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Communication varies between individuals and is further influenced by cognitive illness and cultural differences. These factors create both challenges and opportunities in the professional of nurses. Delivering nursing interventions and providing person-centered care may therefore be stressful, particularly in encounters involving cultural aspects and professional communication.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurse`s experiences of professional communication with individuals with cognitive illness, with a focus on cultural aspects.

Method: The study was conducted using a qualitative interview design with nine nurses. The collected data was analyzed through qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.

Result: Two themes emerged: Experience of professional communication and strategies for addressing challenges. These were divided into four categories: The importance of communication and culture communication tools, cultural aspects and the impact of cognitive illness, solution strategies and culturally sensitive care, and barriers to solution strategies.

Conclusion: Nurses experience significant challenges in professional communication with individuals who have cognitive impairments, particularly related to cultural aspects. The results increase nurses' awareness of these challenging factors, how they are perceived, and how they affect care, health, and the individuals. A greater understanding of cultural aspects can support the development of solution strategies and promote competence development and person-centered care.

Keywords: Cognitive illness, individual cultural care, solution strategies, nurses, professional communication.
