Abstract [sv]

Sammanfattning

Bakgrund:

Abstract [en]

Abstract

Background: The number of people with diabetes type-2 has increased globally. The

illness impairs the body's ability to regulate glucose, which leads to fatigue, increased

urine-production and impaired vision. To reduce the risk of complications, it’s

important to use medication and lifestyle changes. Self-care is central part of the

treatment and includes diet, physical activity, blood glucose-checks and foot care. Self-

care can be performed independently or with the support of others.

Aim: To describe people’s experience of self-care in diabetes type 2.

Method: The literature study is based on 15 qualitative studies. Collection of the

studies was done in the Pubmed database and analyzed using Popenoe et al. (2021).

Results: Self-care was perceived as challenging but also motivating. Diet was perceived

as the most challenging due to factors such as family life, lack of

knowledge/misconception and social gatherings. Some perceived that they could live a

normal/active life by adjusting and maintaining balance. Physical activity was made

difficult by pain, multimorbidity and hectic work-schedule. Some found support from

family or group training. Some people had experience of serious foot injuries. Fear of

pain or anxiety of high blood-glucose levels affected people's performance of blood-

glucose checks.

Conclusion: Self-care was perceived as difficult to include into daily routine due to

multiple illnesses, family life, social-gathering and lack of knowledge/information.

Support from family motivated self-care activities. The result of the present literature

study can guide the development of self-care for people with diabetes type 2.
