Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Digitalization is increasing across society, including within the healthcare sector. This development aims to enhance efficiency for both patients and healthcare providers. However, it also places greater demands on healthcare services, as the availability of health information has become more accessible to those seeking care. Many individuals still lack the ability to effectively access or use digital healthcare. These groups include, among others, older adults, people with low incomes, lower educational levels, limited language proficiency, and lower levels of literacy. Aim:

The aim of this study was to describe patients’ complaints submitted to the Patient Advisory Committee concerning digital healthcare in two different regions, and to identify the measures taken in response to these complaints.

Method: The study employed a descriptive design with a qualitative approach. A total of 242 and 60 complaints, respectively, were analyzed using summative and manifest content analysis.

Main Results: The results showed that the two most common reasons for complaints in both regions concerned accessibility to healthcare services and communication. The most frequently implemented measure in both regions was the provision of information. A notable difference between the regions was that Region Stockholm reported a greater number of actions aimed at modifying and developing their routines and changing management processes. Furthermore, Region Stockholm implemented a wider range of measures. In contrast, Region Gävleborg generally issued apologies and forwarded the feedback to the relevant departments. Region Stockholm demonstrated a clearer ambition to engage in systematic efforts to improve healthcare services.

Conclusion: The measures taken in response to complaints revealed differences between the regions. Region Stockholm reported more actions linked to healthcare development and systematic change management. Additionally, the findings indicate shortcomings in accessibility to digital healthcare services. The absence of clear and respectful communication from healthcare providers was also identified as a fundamental issue affecting patient experience and the perceived safety of individuals seeking care.
