Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the world. One in every two women and one in every five men will be affected at some point in their lifes. Depression is a medical condition that effects a person’s thoughts, feelings, behavior and mental health. The condition is often characterized by sadness and lack of emotional engagement.

Aim: The aim of this literature study was to describe relatives experiences of living with people with depression.

Method: A literature study with a qualitative and descriptive design. Based on nine scientific articles with a qualitative approach. The articles was searched for in the database PubMed.

Main findings: Relatives of people with depression describe a lack of support and information from healthcare, financial difficulties and an everyday life filled of worry, guilt and shame. They expressed a need for more professional information and support from society and healthcare in order to be able to manage and understand their and the depressed person`s situation better. They also described high costs for the illness and loss of assets, which led to financial decline. Many relatives experienced shame, gulit and worry, and the emotional instability made everyday life difficult to manage. Some tried to find strategies to deal with the difficult feelings.

Conclusion: Relatives descriptions of living close to someone with depression suggest that healthcare provides need to pay attention to the experiences of relatives, and include relatives as a central part of care. By offering information, education and support, the nurse can help to reduce feelings of guilt, shame and and isolation in relatives. It can also develop the relationship between  nurse, patient and relatives.
