Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Postpartum depression is a serious form of depression that can affect a woman approximately eight weeks after giving birth. Symptoms include feelings of shame, sadness, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Women who develop postpartum depression have often experienced a traumatic childbirth, have a history of depression, or come from an immigrant background. Aim: The aim is to describe women's thoughts and experiences about postpartum depression. Method: This is a descriptive literature review based on ten scientific articles retrieved from PubMed. All articles were assessed for relevance and quality using appraisal templates developed by the University of Gävle. Main results: Two main themes emerged: Lack of support and Emotional impact. The healthcare encounter was identified as a central aspect of the theme lack of support. Ongoing stigmatization in society towards mental illness made it difficult for women to seek help. The emotional impact was linked to unrealistic expectations of motherhood and external demands. Social connectedness was found to be a protective factor. Conclusion: Many women suffer in silence without realizing that they are experiencing postpartum depression. Early detection through screening and preventive measures were identified as key factors in reducing the risk of postpartum depression.
