Abstract [en]

This study investigates how physical, organizational and social factors influence school safety perceptions, addressing the research question: How canparticipatory design processes contribute to enhancing school safety? Using a case study methodology in an aging Swedish school scheduled for demolition,we collected data through evaluations in the form of Mapping exercises, and Diamond Ranking activities with pedagogical staff. Results indicate that adultpresence, clearly defined spaces, and sense of ownership significantly contribute to perceived safety, while poorly designed areas and areas without clearownership were consistently identified as unsafe. The findings reveal that thoughtful architectural design needs to be coupled with user involvement to improveperceptions of safety. We conclude that participatory design approaches empower school communities to create environments that support children'sfundamental right to safety and well-being, providing valuable insights for educators, designers and other stakeholders developing new school facilities.
