Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how teachers in grades F–3 perceive and use manipulatives in mathematics instruction, with a particular focus on number sense. Using a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with twelve teachers, their experiences and didactic considerations were analysed. The results indicate that teachers use manipulatives to concretise mathematical concepts and to support students’ mathematical language related to number sense. The findings also show that the material is used for students who require additional scaffolding in their work with mathematical concepts. Teachers’ use of manipulatives appears to depend on careful planning and clear introductions to ensure that the material is employed in ways that align with the intended instructional purpose. The study further shows that manipulatives serve as a tool in efforts to create instruction that includes all students. The challenges identified in the study primarily concern time, access to materials, and teachers’ competence in working with manipulative-based approaches. The analysis is informed by a sociocultural perspective and the framework of Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT).
