Understanding acceptance – how people experience acceptance during negative life transitions (English)
Abstract [en]

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate how people experience acceptance in relation to what happens after negative life transitions. The study employed a qualitative design and semi-structured interviews were conducted on Zoom with 10 people who had all experienced a negative life transition. Examples of negative life transitions included financial hardship, illness, death and violence. One inclusion criterion was that at least one year had passed since the life transition. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis through which five overall themes emerged: Acceptance as a gradual process over time, Active coping, Avoidance or temporary distancing, Support in relationships and Changed self-understanding. The results indicate that acceptance is a gradual and individual process, in which each individual has different experiences and characteristics and thereby develops different strategies to handle the life transition and achieve acceptance.
