Forty participants were given a visual search task of deciding whether all the pictures in 3 x 3 search arrays were from the same animal category or if they contained a picture from a deviant category. The purpose of the study was to examine the participant's reaction times to see if they differed between target pictures of snakes compared to bears and wolves, and to analyze if there were any differences in reaction times between a version in greyscale and a color version. Shorter reaction times were observed for target pictures of snakes compared to bears and wolves. Snakes were also estimated as more unpleasant. However, no differences in reaction times were observed between the version in greyscale and the color version. This might be caused by the fact that the current study did not contain any neutral stimuli, like plants, but only animals, and therefore the participants had to rely on the shape of the objects instead of color.
